Changing the oil and cleaning the oil filter is not only the first step in what we call the standard tune-up procedure, but it is also the first thing we recommend doing when purchasing your Honda CB175 / CL175 / SL175 / CB200 / CL200 motorcycle. Cleaning and maintaining the centrifugal oil filter is often the most forgotten maintenance task, yet the Honda service manual calls for it to be done every 3,000 m / 4,800 km or every other oil change. In this video, we cover draining your oil, removing the oil filter cap, replacing troublesome JIS bolts, and reassembling the engine. Taking the time to do this before ever riding your motorcycle gives you a chance to inspect the engine and guarantee the oil you are sending through it is clean and will perform properly.
Once the engine is reassembled move onto the remaining 3 tune-up procedures below. Knowing how to perform these tasks properly is essential knowledge to owning a vintage Honda CB175 / CL175 / SL175 / CB200 / CL200 and a great way to build confidence to get into other repairs on your motorcycle.
