Be sure to watch the video above to learn all the tips and tricks of this process.
1) Find the compression stroke.
2) Verify that power is going to your ignition coils.
3) Connect the test light and set the left point timing with the engine positioned at LF on the compression stroke.
4) Test to verify the test light turns on the moment the engine hits LF on the compression stroke.
5) Timing the right point using the test light with the engine positioned at F on the compression stroke.
6) Test to verify the test light turns on the moment the engine hits F on the compression stroke.
7) Turn the engine over and recheck both sides to verify the timing is exact.
8) Add a small amount of grease to the felt pad to grease the points cam.
Why do we not set a points gap?
In our testing, we have found that the points gap process significantly complicates the setting of the ignition timing on these vintage Honda twins that use a 180-degree crankshaft design without making much of a difference in the performance and reliability of the motorcycle. When you set the static timing dead on we have found these bikes fire up first kick, rev to +9,000 RPMs, and perform great. Setting the points gap according to the Honda service manual can take your timing to the next level, but for 98% of riders, we find the process outlined in our video to be all you need to do.
Dynamic Timing:
There is one step further past even point gap you can take your timing on the Honda CB450 / CL450 / CB500T motorcycle and that's by following the instructions for the dynamic timing to check your timing at idle and full advance. Setting the dynamic timing involves the use of a stroboscopic timing light and running the motorcycle with the inspection cover removed.
