CT90 Kickstarter not engaging after oil change and case clean

1976 CT90 kickstarter not engaging after I changed the oil and cleaned the screen and clutch collection “filter”. I haven’t yet adjusted the clutch adjustment, I’m not sure if that can cause it. Anyone experience this? Just to make it clear, the kickstarter spins but but is not  engaging the piston.
