The factory Honda handlebars were designed to have the wires from each of the switch boxes run through the bars and exit out an elliptical hole at the bottom of the bars near the triple tree. Aftermarket bars like our superbike bars require a modification to work properly with the Honda switch boxes.
There are two mods that must be done to the factory-style switch boxes in order to run the wires on the bottom side of the new superbike or aftermarket handlebars.
- First is each switch box has an alignment pin in the bottom half of the box. Take a pair of pliers and pull them out of each box lower as they will not be used.
- Second is the lower half of the switch boxes need to be notch to allow the wires to be routed out of the boxes and along the bottom side of the handlebars. The notch needs also to be on the low half of the boxes and located on the side of each box that would point inward to the centerline of the bike. The switch boxes are soft aluminum and the notch can be made with a Dremel tool or even a round hand file (taking your time). The finished result should look like an upside-down mouse hole or U shape groove, about 3/8" or 10mm wide and deep to have enough room to let all the wires run out cleanly.
The boxes should now bolt in a place like the factory ones. Use some zip ties to hold the wires in place. on the bars.
